Marian Hossa (CHI), Jiri Hudler (KHL) and Mikael Samuelsson (VAN) left,
which represents 82 goals lost based on 08/09 stats. However, this is a deep
organization that doesn’t fret; just rolls newcomers into the lineup.
It appears, though, that the Wings might be ripe for a Central division
unseating, as Hockeytalk picks Chicago to win the division. But the Wings
will be a solid fourth in the conference.
Jimmy Howard will make the leap to the full-time backup position,
supporting Chris Osgood. The Wings ranked 20th in the league offensively in
08/09, but Osgood was solid as ever in the postseason. Howard, drafted 64th
overall in 2003, has made the long journey—just the way the Wings like
it—through the AHL (Grand Rapids: 2.54GAA; 916SV%).
On offense, the Red Wings stay strong--despite the losses of
personnel—with Johan “The Mule” Franzen (34 goals), Henrik Zetterberg (40)
and Hart Trophy nominee Datsyuk (31).
For jam, center Justin Abdelkader returns as a rookie again this season.
Todd Bertuzzi signed a one-year deal. One wonders why the aging, slower
Bertuzzi was chosen to fill holes left by the departures described above.
Are the Wings making a mistake similar to that made by the Ducks two seasons
ago? “Bert” had 15 goals for Calgary last season.
Darren Helm will start the season on the short-term injured list, but
broke through for four goals and one assist in the playoffs. Justin
Abdelkader will get a shot at Mikael Samuelsson’s vacated right wing spot.
