Game Recaps

Game 1: Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn scored goals at :34 and 2:02 of the first to pace the Canadiens to a 4-1 victory over Boston Thursday.

It was the first time that a pair of brothers each scored goals in a Canadiens playoff game since Frank and Peter Mahovlich accomplished the feat in 1974.

Shane Hnidy of Boston pulled the Bruins within one at 8:34 of the first, but the Canadiens pulled away with a second period goal from Brian Smolinski and a third period tally by plugger Tom Kostopoulos.

Montreal leads, 1-0

Game 2: Alex Kovalev scored a power-play goal 2:30 into overtime to give Montreal a 3-2 win over Boston on Saturday night and a 2-0 lead in their first-round series.

Boston's Peter Schaefer and David Krejci scored third period goals to draw the Bruins even, but Kovalev, who put seven shots on goalie Tim Thomas, was finally rewarded in OT.

Boston outshot the Canadiens 39-31.

Montreal leads 2-0

Game 3:

A day after Alex Kovalev sank Boston in overtime, the Bruins had their revenge as Marc Savard jumped on the ice during a delayed penalty to beat Carey Price in overtime as the Bruins beat the Canadiens, 2-1.

"I knew at one point they were going to beat us," Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau said. "We had a couple of really good chances in overtime, but Thomas played big."

Goalie Tim Thomas stopped 27 of 28 shots for the Bruins, while Price made 29 saves as the goaltending for both clubs was again solid.

Both regulation goals were scored at even strength. Milan Lucic got the Bruins going on a feed from Savard and Marc Stuart at 6:30 of the first. Tom Kostopoulos, a Canadiens depth forward, scored his second goal of the series at 4:26 of the second, tying the game at one.

The Bruins had lost 13 consecutive games against the Canadiens prior to Sunday's game.

Montreal leads 2-1

Game 4:

Andrei Kostitsyn passed the puck in front of Tim Thomas' crease, it was deflected to defenseman Patrice Brisebois and the Montreal Canadiens scored their first and only goal of the game to defeat the Boston Bruins, 1-0 in a tightly played game Tuesday night.

Now leading 3-1 in the series, the Canadiens are one win from advancing to round two.

Rookie goaltender Carey Price has allowed just five goals in the four games of the series.

Boston's Phil Kessel has been a healthy scratch for three straight games. Montreal's Michael Ryder was a healthy scratch as the Habs dressed seven defensemen.

Game 5:

Phil Kessel, a scratch in earlier playoff games, scored on the power play at 7:45 of the second period to even the score at one and set the stage for four more Bruin goals as Boston beat Montreal 5-1 to stay alive.

Alex Kovalev's goal at 9:47 of the first period got the scoring underway.

Carey Price turned the puck over and Glen Metropolit took advantage, scoring the game winner at 3:31 of the third. Goals by Zdeno Chara (power play), Marco Sturm (shorthanded) and Vladimir Sobotka (even strength) followed.

Marco Sturm made an almost singlehanded effort on a late shift, recovering a rebound and saving the Bruins from elimination, as he drew Canadiens goalie Carey Price across the crease and lifted it high over the Habs netminder to win the game for Boston at with 2:37 left in the third period.

It was a very wild third period in Boston, including two lead changes. The Bruins, trailing 3-2 in the third period and facing elimination, came back to lead 4-3, then watched the Canadiens tie it quickly after.

At 15:56 of the third, Chris Higgins scored his second goal of the game, tying the match at 4-4 just eleven seconds after Phil Kessel scored what looked like the game winner.

Milan Lucic deflected an Aaron Ward shot at 7:47 of the third as the Bruins scored to tie the game 3-3.
