with Audio Links Plus all-rookie and all-star teams LAS VEGAS (June 23, 2010) – As the show draws near, the League's biggest trophies wait for their entrance outside the ballroom:
The NHL Awards show opened with some very funny material from actor and writer Jay Mohr. "How many hockey jokes did you have to write today?" host Mohr asked to big laughs. And to Henrik Sedin, Mohr goofed that he couldn't tell him apart from identical twin brother Daniel. "Who are you? Are you Danny? Or are you Tito, Jermaine or Joe Sr.," asked Mohr, whose opening routine generally killed. CALDER TROPHY Mark Wahlberg presented the Calder "Tie Domi," meaning Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres, the star of "Boogie Nights" stumbling over the Buffalo rookie's name. Myers, at 6'8", was the clear choice, the only rookie to lead his club in time on ice (23:44). BACKSTAGE: Listen to Tyler Myers remarks after winning the Calder. SELKE TROPHY Pavel Datsyuk won his record-setting third consecutive Selke Trophy since Bob Gainey of the Canadiens won it the first four seasons it was presented. Datsyuk got a few chuckles after thanking Wings' management for paying him. ART ROSS TROPHY (SCORING TITLE) Awarded on the red carpet to Henrik Sedin, whose 112 points were the highest total of any NHL player. He is the first Canuck in franchise history to win the award. Runnners-up Sid Crosby and Alex Ovechkin both recorded 109.
TED LINDSAY AWARD Alexander Ovechkin wins the renamed award, formerly known as the Lester Pearson Trophy. Ovechkin stood with Ted Lindsay at his flank. JACK ADAMS AWARD Dave Tippett got some chuckles after he mentioned that normally the winner would thank the owner, but the Coyotes coach admitted "I don't know who that is." Tippett, hired just one week prior to the season, led the team to the playoffs for the first time since 2002. The club, whose status and ownership remains in question, ranked third in team defense and were sixth in penalty kill. BACKSTAGE: Listen to Dave Tippett remarks after winning the Jack Adams. VEZINA TROPHY Ryan Miller brought the Vezina back to Buffalo for the first time since Dominik Hasek's six Vezinas in eight years. He thanked the Sabres and fans, also his teammates. Miller won 41 games and recorded a 2.22GAA. Miller's silver medal-winning performance at the Olympics led to speculation that he'd be nominated for the Hart, too, but wasn't. MASTERTON TROPHY Jose Theodore, who won a very close Hart race in 2002, won a perhaps more meaningful award, the Masterton, for his dedication to the game. Theodore's son Chace passed away during the summer of 2009 just weeks after his premature birth. Theodore responded with a professional effort that included a 20-0-3 run during the final three months of the season. KING CLANCY TROPHY Shane Doan won his first Clancy award, given to the "player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice and who has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community." LADY BYNG Martin St. Louis won his first Byng after being a finalist for the fifth time. Sixth in League scoring with 94 points with only 12 penalty minutes. He was also named an all-star. NORRIS TROPHY Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks won his first. Keith played all 82 games and is the fourth Hawks defenseman to win the award, joining Pierre Pilote, Chris Chelios and Doug Wilson. He registered career-highs with 14 goals, 55 assists and 59 points. His 76 first-place votes topped Mike Green's 34. His total 1,096 points bested Green's 831. BACKSTAGE: Listen to Duncan Keith remarks after winning the Norris. MARK MESSIER LEADERSHIP TROPHY Sidney Crosby became the fourth winner, following Jarome Iginla, Mats Sundin and Chris Chelios. The award is presented to a player "in recognition of his commitment and service to charities in his community." NHL Foundation Player Award Ryan Miller, whose Steadfast Foundation benefits those afflicted and affected by cancer, particularly childhood forms. He has raised over $500,000 since its founding in 2006, which was inspired by Miller's cousin, Matt, who battled leukemia before succumbing to the disease in 2007. HART TROPHY (MVP) Henrik Sedin won his first Hart trophy, edging out Alex Ovechkin in a close race. Sedin received 46 first-place votes for a total of 894, bettering Ovechkin's 40 first-place votes and 834 total. Sedin led the Canucks to a second consecutive Northwest Division title and won the Art Ross Trophy. Henrik played 19 games this season without his brother, linemate Daniel. He also led the NHL in assists with 83. Five of his 29 goals were game-winners.
