![]() BOB PROBERT DEAD AT 45 HOCKEYTALK NEWS
An autopsy is scheduled for today. AM 800 CKLW reported that CPR was performed shortly after Probert collapsed at 2pm ET Monday. He was transported to Windsor Regional Hospital where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Probert’s father-in-law, Dan Parkinson, asked for privacy while the family grieves. Probert and his wife have four children. Joey Kocur, Probert’s former teammate in Detroit and fellow enforcer, released a statement. “This is a very sad day for Red Wings fans as we have lost one of the toughest players, best power forwards and all-around great guys who ever wore the Winged Wheel,” said Kocur. In 1989, Probert, who battled substance abuse and alcoholism, was arrested while attempting to cross the border into Canada with 14 grams of cocaine. He served three months in federal prison and three more months in a halfway house. In 1994, while an unrestricted free agent, he crashed his motorcycle in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, and was found to have a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit. Traces of cocaine were also found in his bloodstream. At the time of arrest, Probert famously quipped, “Charge me with the usual, man.” Upon retirement after the 2001-02 season, Probert joined the Blackhawks radio team. During the 2000’s, Probert had a couple of other run-ins with the law, and returned to rehab on at least one occasion. His ability to chip in offensively made him a rarity amongst enforcers. His most memorable season came in 1987-88, when he led the league with a whopping 398 penalty minutes yet scored 29 goals and 62 points, a career-high. He also played in the NHL All-Star Game that season.
