NHL: Jets

Jets face former Jets for first time

HOCKEYTALK NEWS

October 15, 2011 -- PHOENIX -- The new Winnipeg Jets visited Phoenix Saturday night to play the old Winnipeg Jets (now the Phoenix Coyotes).  Only Shane Doan remains on the Phoenix roster as an original Jet and he welcomed his original NHL city by picking up a pair of assists, for his third and fourth points of the season.

Nearly half the crowd at Jobing.com Arena sported jerseys from both the old and the new Winnipeg Jets. "It's a great atmosphere because when you get the visiting fans in there it really puts a burr in your fan's butts," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett told NHL.com.

It would have been great for the new Jets to get their first win against the old Jets, but it wasn’t to be.  Second year defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson recorded his first ever two-goal game and the Coyotes won 4-1.

The Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise has gone 0-8-1 against the Coyotes in its last nine meetings.

Phoenix, winners of two straight, plays its next five of six at home.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan, taken by the then-Jets seventh overall in 1995 (Kamloops, WHL), is the only NHL player to spend his entire career with the club that drafted him, and then face his former club.
