Islanders Agree to Terms with Reasoner
Center Agrees to Terms on a Two-Year Deal

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (July 1, 2011) – The New York Islanders have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Marty Reasoner.

The Honeoye, NY native played all 82 games last season with the Florida Panthers, scoring 17 points (four goals and 13 assists).

“The addition of Marty solidifies our center position,” Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. “He is a player who can be counted on to win face-offs and kill penalties, while at the same time contribute offensively.”

Prior to last season, Reasoner played two years, with the Atlanta Thrashers, totaling 18 goals and 29 assists for 47 points in 159 games. The 6’1, 205 pound center played the majority of the six seasons from 2001-2008 with the Edmonton Oilers, with a brief stint with the Boston Bruins in 2006 where he scored eight points (two goals and six assists). With the Oilers, Reasoner totaled 45 goals and 76 assists for 121 points in 351 games.

He was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the first round (14th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft and played three seasons in St. Louis. Reasoner recorded 47 points (17 goals and 30 assists) in 95 games.

Internationally, Reasoner has represented the United States at three World Championships in 2002, 2003 and 2006.

Captain to join New York Islanders Hockey Operation Staff

UNIONDALE, NY, May 26, 2011 – New York Islanders captain Doug Weight announced his retirement today from the National Hockey League. He will remain with the Islanders organization as an Assistant Coach and Senior Advisor to the General Manager.

“It was an honor to be a member of the NHL for the 19 years I laced up my skates,” Weight said. “I have a lifetime of memories from playing this game and cherish them all. I am excited to begin this next phase of my professional career and help the Islanders continue to climb the ladder to winning the Stanley Cup.”

Weight, a veteran of 1,335 NHL games, finished his career, placing 65th place on the NHL’s all time scoring list with 1,033 points. The Detroit, MI, native’s 748 career assists rank 40th all time, while his 1,238 regular season games played are the 76th highest total in NHL history.

“Doug is the ultimate leader,” said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. “He has taken our young core of players, over the past three years, and helped elevate their game to a point where we now see our franchise competing with the top teams in the league. On behalf of the organization, I’d like to thank Doug for his commitment to the New York Islanders and we are excited to have him join our Hockey Operations Department in seeing through with our goal of winning the Stanley Cup.”

Weight, a four-time NHL All-Star, was named the 12th captain in Islanders history on October 2, 2009. Originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the second round (34th overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Weight’s career included stints with the Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks and the Islanders.

The 5’11, 196-pound center played in 97 NHL Playoff games, posting 23 goals and 49 assists. He won his first and only Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006. Weight reached the 1,000 point milestone with the Islanders on January 2, 2009, becoming the eighth American-born player and 73rd NHL player to reach 1,000 points.

On the international stage, Weight won a silver medal with the United States at the 2002 Winter Olympics and also skated with the 1998 and 2002 United States Olympic Teams. He also represented the U.S. in the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 and in 1996, helping Team USA win the championship in ‘96. Weight appeared in one World Junior Championship in 1991, leading the entire tournament in scoring, and he also played in the 1993, 1994 and 2005 World Championships for the United States.
