QUICK SHOTS:
STRONG RETURNS FROM BREAK
CHRISTOPHER HIGGINS OUT OF NOWHERE ![]() Smithtown, NY native returns to the Island on Wednesday to play the Islanders, scores two goals, the Habs win by two. The next night, Thursday, in Florida, he assists on new linemate Alex Kovalev’s game winning goal. Sacre Bleu! A New Yorker? Not since Matt Schnieder... Saturday night, Higgins scored twice yet again in defeating the Lightning. The rookie gets himself serious consideration for Player of the Week. Since the Olympic break, he’s lifted his club on his shoulders and the results are good, with three victories in a row. BRIERE, SABRES ROAR BACK FROM BREAK After a close loss at home to Atlanta, Buffalo has continued its torrid pace with two key victories over division rivals Boston and Toronto.
DEREK ROY, reunited with linemates TOMAS VANEK and MAXIM AFINOGENOV, managed a hat trick against the Leafs Friday. Break's over, and the Sabres have continued their assault on Hasek-less Ottawa's lofty position. The club followed up its 6-2 dusting of the Leafs in Nickel City with a 3-2 squeaker victory on the road in Beantown, dumping another division rival, the Bruins. "It was great to see Marty shut the door," said coach Lindy Ruff, who started his second string netminder in place of rising star Ryan Miller. Ruff must be very happy to enter the trade deadline with two number one goaltenders. But, as it's been said in this column just a few weeks ago, why trade Biron when the "mojo" is working so steadily? DEVIL OF A CLUB COME PLAYOFF TIME MAR 4 (AP) -- Martin Brodeur made 26 saves to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday night, becoming the first goalie to win 30 games for 10 straight seasons. Even Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff, who's one of the league's brilliant young netminders, has won 30 (31 this year so far) only once. Goes to show how tremendous a feat it is for Brodeur. No one's been talking about the Devils as Cup contenders since the departure of Norris winners SCOTT NIEDERMAYER (Anaheim) and SCOTT STEVENS (retirement). In fact, it seems sacrilegious to do so! Let's take stock of what the Patrik Elias-less Devils have done since the break, all against divisional opponents: Beat the Flyers in a shootout, then lost to the Islanders in a shootout, then shut out the Rangers in regulation. Five of a possible six points. GABORIK HOT, WILD NOT Super Slovak MARIAN GABORIK has managed five goals and an assist in his first four games back since the break. You'd think the Minnesota Wild could follow suit. They haven't, dropping road games to the Avs, Kings and Ducks. Fortunately, Gaborik scored in the third Sunday to dump the Avs in Minnesota. The Wild dumped Alex Daigle last week. Wonder whether the Wild will be a "buyer" on trade deadline day? They've got a goalie to deal in DWAYNE ROLOSON, and they probably will.
