Tanguay to Habs OTTAWA (June 20, 2008) – Montreal Canadiens’ General Manager Bob Gainey announced the acquisition of forward Alex Tanguay along with a 5th round pick (138th overall) in 2008 from the Calgary Flames in return for the Canadiens’ first round selection (25th overall) in 2008 and a second round pick in 2009. Alex Tanguay, 28, will enter his 8th NHL season in 2008-09. Last season the left winger played 78 games with the Flames recording 58 points, including 18 goals, had a plus-11 rating and was assessed 48 penalty minutes. Tanguay recorded 539 points (177 goals and 362 assists) in 609 NHL career games with 311 penalty minutes and a plus-111 rating. The Ste-Justine, Quebec, native participated in the Stanley Cup playoffs in each of his first eight NHL seasons recording a total of 58 points (19 points, 39 assists) in 96 games. Tanguay, 6’1’’ and 191 lbs, was a first round selection, 12th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He was instrumental in the Avalanche’s Stanley Cup championship in 2000-01, recording 21 points, including 6 goals, in 23 games.
Andrei Kostitsyn inks 3-year deal with Habs MONTREAL (July 2, 2008) – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of forward Andrei Kostitsyn to a three-year contract (2008-09 to 2010-11). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Last season the 23-year old left winger had a career year offensively recording 53 points (26 goals and 27 assists) in 78 games. Kostitsyn was second on the team with 12 power play goals and ended the regular season with a +15 plus/minus ratio. Last spring, Kostitsyn led the team with five playoff goals. Born in Novopolotsk, Belarus, Kostitsyn will enter his fourth season in the Canadiens’ organization in the fall. The 6’1” and 201 lbs forward recorded 67 points (29 goals and 38 assists), 37 penalty minutes and a +19 plus/minus ratio in 112 NHL career games, all with the Canadiens. Kostitsyn, who played for his homeland Belarus at the World Hockey Championships on four occasions was the Canadiens’ first round selection, 10th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

MONTREAL CANADIENS LARAQUE TO HABS MONTREAL (July 3, 2008) – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of free agent forward Georges Laraque to a three-year contract (2008-09 to 2010-11). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. “A 10-year veteran, Georges is the kind of player who made his mark in the NHL. With his physical play and determination, we are convinced that he will add valuable energy to our group of players,’’ said Bob Gainey. Laraque, 31, played 71 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, recording 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists) and leading the team with 141 penalty minutes. He took part in 15 of the Penguins 20 playoff games, helping the club to reach the Stanley Cup Finals. Laraque reached the Stanley Cup Finals twice in the past three seasons, having played 15 games with the Edmonton Oilers in 2006. A native of Montreal, Laraque was acquired by the Penguins from the Phoenix Coyotes at the trading deadline on February 27, 2007. The 6’3” and 243 lbs right winger played 634 NHL regular season games with Edmonton (490), Phoenix (56) and Pittsburgh (88). He recorded 148 career points (52 goals, 96 assists) and 1,037 penalty minutes. He also participated in 53 career playoff games, scoring 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists) and serving 68 penalty minutes. A second-round selection, 31st overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 1995, Laraque joined the Phoenix Coyotes as a free agent on July 5, 2006. As a testimony of his devotion to the community, Georges Laraque won the Oilers’ Community Service Award on four occasions from 2001 to 2006. |
