Preissing, Nagy, Stuart, Calder & Handzus Sign

FREE AGENT DEFENSEMAN BRAD STUART

JULY 3, 2007 -- LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent defenseman Brad Stuart, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Stuart, 27, has played seven NHL seasons with the Calgary Flames, the Boston Bruins and the San Jose Sharks. In 507 career regular season games, he has 206 points (53-153=206), 303 penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating. In 52 career playoff games, he has 12 points (3-9=12) and 33 penalty minutes.

This past season, Stuart played with both Calgary and Boston, and he recorded 22 points (7-15=22) and 44 penalty minutes while skating in 75 games. He had 17 points (7-10=17) and 26 penalty minutes in 48 games with Boston, and he recorded his 200th NHL point with a goal versus Pittsburgh on January 18, 2007. He was traded to Calgary along with center Wayne Primeau in exchange for defenseman Andrew Ference and right wing Chuck Kobasew on February 10, 2007, and in 27 games with the Flames, he recorded five points (0-5=5), 18 penalty minutes and a plus-12 rating.

Stuart also recorded one point (0-1=1) and six penalty minutes in six Stanley Cup playoff games with Calgary this past postseason.

Stuart established new career highs for goals (12), assists (31) and points (43) while skating with both San Jose and Boston in 2005-06. The 6-2, 213-pound native of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, began his NHL career with the Sharks in 1999-2000, where he led all defensemen in scoring, finished second in voting for the Calder Trophy (given to the league’s Rookie of the Year) and was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team. Stuart was originally selected by the Sharks in the first-round (3rd overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Internationally, Stuart has played for his native Canada at the World Championships in 2006 and 2001, and at the World Junior Championships in 1999 (silver medal).

Prior to turning pro, Stuart played three seasons with Regina and Calgary of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and collected 175 points (53-122=175) and 241 penalty minutes in 188 career games. He was named the Canadian Major Junior Defenseman of the Year and a Canadian Major Junior First Team All-Star while leading Calgary to a WHL championship in 1999.

KINGS SIGN FREE AGENT CENTER MICHAL HANDZUS TO A FOUR-YEAR CONTRACT

JULY 2, 2007 -- LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have signed free agent center Michal Handzus to a four-year contract, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

Handzus, 30, has played eight NHL seasons including one this past season with the Chicago Blackhawks - three with the Philadelphia Flyers (2002-03 to 2003-04 and 2005-06), two with the Phoenix Coyotes (2000-01 and 2001-02) and three with the St. Louis Blues (1998-99 to 2000-01). In 517 career regular season games, he has 300 points (115-185=300), 313 penalty minutes and a plus-51 rating. In 60 career playoff games, he has 25 points (7-18=25), 34 penalty minutes and a plus-4 rating.

This past season, Handzus appeared in eight games with Chicago and collected eight points (3-5=8), six penalty minutes and a plus-4 rating. He collected his 300th NHL point versus St. Louis on October 21, 2006. He also matched a career high with three assists in a game versus the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 7, 2006.

Handzus, a former teammate of center Ladislav Nagy in both St. Louis and Phoenix, finished second on Philadelphia in scoring in 2003-04 with a career high 58 points (20-38=58), and he helped the Flyers win an Atlantic Division title and reach the Eastern Conference Finals that year. In addition, he finished second in voting for the Frank J. Selke Trophy (given to the NHL’s best defensive forward) after scoring a career high 25 goals and finishing with a career high plus-19 in 1999-00. Handzus has scored 44 or more points five times and 20 or more goals three times during his NHL career.

Handzus, a 6-5, 217-pound native of Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, was originally selected by St. Louis in the fourth-round (101st overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.

Internationally, Handzus has represented Slovakia at the 2002 Winter Olympics Games, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, and at the World Championships in 2005, 2002 (gold medal) and 2000 (silver medal). He has also represented Slovakia at the World Junior Championships in 1996 and 1997.

KINGS SIGN FREE AGENT LEFT WING LADISLAV NAGY TO A ONE-YEAR CONTRACT

JULY 2, 2007 -- LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have signed free agent left wing Ladislav Nagy to a one-year contract, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

Nagy, 28, has played seven NHL seasons with the Dallas Stars, the Phoenix Coyotes and the St. Louis Blues. In 397 career regular season games, he has 285 points (106-179=285), 340 penalty minutes and a plus-37 rating. In 18 career playoff games, he has four points (2-2=4) and 23 penalty minutes.

This past season, Nagy played with both Dallas and Phoenix, and he recorded a career high 43 assists, 55 points (12-43=55) and 54 penalty minutes while matching a career high with 80 games played. Nagy had 41 points (8-33=41) and 48 penalty minutes in 55 games with Phoenix before he was traded to Dallas in exchange for left wing Mathias Tjarnqvist and a first-round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft on February 12, 2007. In 25 games with Dallas, Nagy recorded 14 points (4-10=14) and six penalty minutes.

Nagy also recorded two points (1-1=2), two penalty minutes and a plus-1 rating in seven Stanley Cup playoff games with Dallas this past postseason.

Nagy, who has recorded 52 or more points in each of his last four NHL seasons and is a three-time 20-goal scorer in the league, began his NHL career with the Blues in 1999-00. The 5-11, 192-pound native of Saca, Slovakia, was originally selected by the Blues in the seventh-round (177th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. In addition, he was a teammate of center Michal Handzus in both St. Louis and Phoenix.

Internationally, Nagy was named to Team Slovakia for the 2006 Winter Olympics Games but missed the tournament because of injury. He did skate for Slovakia at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, and at the World Championships in 2003 (bronze medal), 2002 (gold medal) and 2001. He also represented his country at the World Junior Championships in 1999 (bronze medal).

LEFT WING KYLE CALDER

TO A TWO-YEAR CONTRACT

JULY 2, 2007 -- LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have signed free agent left wing Kyle Calder to a two-year contract, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

Calder, 28, has played seven NHL seasons – six with the Chicago Blackhawks (1999-06) – and this past season with both the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings. In 397 career regular season games, he has 245 points (99-146=245) and 242 penalty minutes. In 18 career playoff games, he has three points (2-1=3), 10 penalty minutes and a plus-1 rating.

This past season, Calder recorded 21 points (9-12=21) and 36 penalty minutes in 59 games with Philadelphia. He was acquired by Detroit in a three-team deal that also included Chicago on February 27, 2006, and in 19 games with the Red Wings, he recorded 14 points (5-9=14), 22 penalty minutes and a plus-6 rating.

Calder also recorded one assist, eight penalty minutes and a plus-1 rating in 13 playoff games as he helped lead the Red Wings to the Western Conference Finals this past postseason.

Calder, who established new career highs for goals (26) and points (59) with Chicago in 2005-06, is a two-time 20-goal scorer in the NHL who has averaged 77 games played over his last five NHL seasons. The 5-11, 180-pound native of Mannville, Alberta, was originally selected by Chicago in the fifth-round (130th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

Internationally, Calder has played for his native Canada at the World Championships in 2006, 2003 (gold medal) and 2002, and at the World Junior Championships in 1999 (silver medal).

Prior to turning pro, Calder played with both Kamloops and Regina in the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 1995-99.

KINGS SIGN FREE AGENT DEFENSEMAN TOM PREISSING TO A FOUR-YEAR CONTRACT

JULY 2, 2007 -- LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have signed free agent defenseman Tom Preissing to a four-year contract, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

Preissing, 28, has played three NHL seasons – two with the San Jose Sharks (2003-04 and 2005-06) – and this past season with the Ottawa Senators. In 223 career regular season games, he has 100 points (20-80=10), 56 penalty minutes and a plus-65 rating. In 42 career playoff games, he has 15 points (3-12=15), 14 penalty minutes and a plus-3 rating.

This past season, Preissing led all Senators defensemen with 31 assists, 38 points (7-31=40) and a plus-40 rating (second overall on the club) while collecting 18 penalty minutes in a career high 80 games played. His plus-40 rating also tied for first among all league defensemen and tied for third overall in the NHL.

Preissing also recorded seven points (2-5=7), 10 penalty minutes and a plus-3 rating in 20 playoff games as he helped lead the Senators to the Stanley Cup Finals this past season. In addition, he established new postseason highs for goals (2) and games played (20), and matched a postseason high for points (7).

Preissing, who has averaged 77 games played, 40 points and 22 penalty minutes over his past two NHL seasons, began his NHL career with the Sharks and was named the club’s Rookie of the Year in 2003-04. The 6-0, 198-pound native of Arlington Heights, Illinois, was originally signed by San Jose as an unrestricted free agent on April 4, 2003.

Prior to turning pro, Preissing played four seasons with Colorado College in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). While there, he was named as a WCHA First Team All-Star, an NCAA West First Team All-American and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award after leading the nation in points scored by a defenseman (42 GP, 23-29=52) in 2002-03. He also tied for first in the nation with 17 power play goals and was named the WCHA’s Student Athlete of the Year while serving as captain of his team that season.

KINGS RE-SIGN DEFENSEMAN JAROSLAV MODRY

JUNE 29, 2007 -- LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have re-signed defenseman Jaroslav Modry to a one-year contract, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Modry, 36, played in 76 games this past season with the Kings and the Dallas Stars and he recorded 18 points (1-17=18) and 54 penalty minutes. He began the season with the Stars before he was acquired by the Kings on February 27 along with a first-round draft choice in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, a second-round choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, a third-round draft choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and the rights to defenseman Johan Fransson from the Stars in exchange for defenseman Mattias Norstrom, right wing Konstantin Pushkarev, a third-round draft choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth-round draft choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Modry, who played with the Kings from the 1995-96 season through the 2003-04 season and was an All-Star in 2002 when the Game was played at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, recorded 10 points (1-9=10) and 32 penalty minutes in 57 games with the Stars and he had eight points (all assists) and 22 penalty minutes in 22 games with the Kings. On the Kings’ all-time scoring list among defensemen, Modry ranks 10th in points with 158, 10th in assists with 124 and tied for 10th in goals with 34.

A veteran of 12 NHL seasons, Modry is a 6-2, 220-pound native of Ceske-Budejovice, Czech Republic. He has recorded 241 points (48-193=241) and 460 penalty minutes over 645 regular season NHL games with the Kings, Dallas, Atlanta, Ottawa and New Jersey. He has also played in 19 career NHL playoff games and has three points (1-2=3) and six penalty minutes.

During the 2005-06 season, Modry’s lone season with Atlanta, he led the team in assists (31) and points (38) among defensemen. In 2003-04 with the Kings, he led the club in plus-minus (plus-11) and average ice time (24:23). In 2002-03 he was fourth in the NHL in total shots among defensemen (205) while in 2001-02 he led all Kings defensemen with a career-high 38 assists and 42 points. In 2000-01 Modry was named the Kings’ “Unsung Hero” in a vote by his teammates.

Modry was originally selected by New Jersey in the ninth-round (179th overall) in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft.

KINGS ANNOUNCE QUALIFYING OFFERS

JUNE 26, 2007 -- LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings and President/General Manager Dean Lombardi have announced that qualifying offers have been tendered to the following players:
