NHL:
Sabres
Draft preview: Sabres likely
considering defense first The Buffalo Sabres have selected a defenseman with their first pick of the draft each of the last two years. Given last season’s loss of Brian Campbell, a questionable veteran defensive core and a depleted farm system, it is likely that the Sabres will make it three years in a row. If the Sabres do go this route, it is uncertain who they will select. Much of it depends on availability (who is left at the 13th spot) and what the team is specifically looking for. However, it is apparent that a physical presence is needed on the back end, with a power play quarterback (offensive defenseman) coming in a close second. If this is the case, John Carlson of the Indiana Ice (USHL) would fit both molds. The six-foot-two, 215-pound defenseman is definitely a load. Though he is not the type to lay out opponents, he can play a physical game and will utilize his bulky frame to body check opposing forwards on a regular basis. Carlson is very reliable in his own end, too, as evident by his plus-11 rating last season. This is why he saw significant time on the penalty kill. What really stands out about Carlson, however, is his offensive abilities. He recorded 43 points in 59 games last season, with 21 of these points coming on the power play. Carlson is a natural at quarterbacking the power play given his flexible hands and slick distribution skills. He can also contribute 5-on-5, as he possesses a quality transition game. Some scouts knock his footwork, as he is a solid skater but not an exceptional one. Nevertheless, Carlson still displays the ability to rush the ice and beat defenders in 1-on-1 situations. Since Carlson is used to being on the ice in all situations (5-on-5, penalty kill, power play) and has proven to be a clutch player, he brings a lot to the table. Carlson is projected to go anywhere from 15th to 30th (mid-to-late first round) so he should be available if the Sabres want him. Keep in mind that the Sabres also have the 26th pick of the draft, courtesy of the San Jose trade last season. As a result, the team has a number of options.
