Ducks Review/Preview
Duck Notes by Karen Francis

November 25, 2007 -- ANAHEIM -- The Ducks stalled a bit, but nonetheless found much to be thankful for this past Thanksgiving week.

RYAN GETZLAF

The Ducks signed forward Ryan Getzlaf to a five year contract extension worth $26.625 million. Getzlaf would have become a restricted free agent on July 1. GM Brian Burke wanted to avoid another situation like last summer where other teams start flinging hefty offer sheets in the direction of RFA’s. That forces a team to either match the offer or lose the player in return for draft picks. That whole scenario doesn’t have to be played out and both Getzlaf and Burke are happy with the deal and thankful it is out of the way. Next player to work on is Corey Perry.

GAMES

The Ducks had two games this past week and are coming to the end of their Pacific Division meetings. The Ducks played in Dallas the day before Thanksgiving and came home to play Phoenix the day after Thanksgiving.

The Ducks got into penalty trouble in the third period in Dallas with two consecutive delay of game penalties. Both pucks were accidental, but led to a 5 on 3 opportunity for the Stars. The Stars scored on both penalties and went ahead, 2-1. Thus :41 seconds of “whoops” led to the loss of two points in the standings. The Ducks had a much better effort against Dallas than in the previous two meetings, they just did not get the results. The Ducks were thankful that Todd Bertuzzi was back on the ice after missing 14 games due to a concussion suffered October 14.

The day after Thanksgiving saw a matinee between the Ducks the Coyotes. Once again the penalty kill let the Ducks down. The Ducks were leading 3-2 against their former back up goaltender, Ilya Bryzgalov. The Ducks were unable to kill a late penalty and the Coyotes tied things up and got the extra point in the shootout. Jonas Hiller was in goal for the Ducks with his newly painted mask. The Ducks were thankful to get a point and grateful they don’t see the Coyotes at home again until the final game of the year on April 6. The away team has won each game thus far in the series.

THE STANDINGS

The Ducks are currently 10-9-4 on the season with 24 points. That is just one point more than last week. They have dropped from second to third in the Pacific Division, but are still just two points away from the first place Stars. The Ducks are in 11th place in the Western Conference. Six teams in the Western Conference had 24 points and it seems as if the standings change daily.

ROSTER MOVES

Center Brian Sutherby was acquired from the Washington Capitals for a second round draft pick in 2009. After Sutherby passed his physical, Ryan Carter continued to rack up the frequent flyer miles and went back to Portland. Sutherby played in both games this past week and spent some time on a line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Sutherby has not earned any points yet, but has been a solid contributor thus far.

INJURY UPDATE

Mathieu Schneider came back into the line up in Dallas after missing two games to a sore hip pointer.

Todd Bertuzzi was cleared to play by team physicians and had his first full practice with the team on Tuesday including contact. He also came back into the line up in Dallas. He saw power play time and spent time on several different lines. He earned an assist on a power play goal during the Phoenix game. Bertuzzi looks to be pegged alongside Andy McDonald and Chris Kunitz, who has been replaced, for now, by Sutherby.

Drew Miller left the Phoenix game in the first period with a knee injury. It was determined to be a mild strain and he should only miss a couple of days. With Bertuzzi back in the line up and the addition of Sutherby, Miller is likely to be sent back to Portland in the not too distant future.

PERSONAL PLAYER NEWS

Congratulations to Sami and Joanna Pahlsson! Their first baby, a girl named Selma, was born on Monday, a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. Pahlsson’s absence from Tuesday’s practice was not a “maintenance” issue, but family related. Best wishes to the new family!

THE WEEK AHEAD

The Ducks finish up their 10 game series against Pacific Division rivals with another contest against the Kings at home on Sunday. Then they go on a Canadian road trip to Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. This will be Bertuzzi’s first trip back to Vancouver since being traded two years ago.
