In overtime, however, it was David Steckel of the Capitals who would be the difference-maker, deflecting a Brooks Laich shot from the point past Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury at 6:22. There were four lead changes in the game. Game 7 will be Wednesday night in Washington. Shots on goal: PIT 42, WAS 24. Power play: WAS 1-4, PIT 2-5. --JB GAME 5: PIT 4 WAS 3 (OT) PIT: Staal, J. 1st OT) After a scoreless first period, Jordan Staal scored his first of the playoffs from just in front of Simeon Varlamov, to the left of the goal crease, at 5:17, to get the Penguins on the board first. Alexander Ovechkin responded just 59 seconds later, tying the game at one apiece on a blast from the top of the faceoff circle to the right of Marc-Andre Fleury. Nik Backstrom converted a give-and-go from Sergei Fedorov on the power play at 14:35 of the second. In the third, the Penguins jumped on the Caps early, with Ruslan Fedotenko scoring just :51 into the final frame, on a shot from the high slot, which was his eighth of the game to that point. Fedotenko would finish with a whopping ten shots on net, as the Pens outshot the Caps, 42-31. Matt Cooke scored a gritty goal from in close at 6:27 of the third, giving the Pens a lead that they would hold until Ovechkin saved his club once more, converting a pass from Backstrom to the left of Fleury with 4:08 remaining. The shot sizzled just over Fleury's outstretched left pad. In overtime, Evgeni Malkin drew a penalty by Milan Jurcina, and at 3:28, finished the Caps off by throwing the puck at the net while charging hard down the right wing side. The puck deflected off of Tom Poti's stick and beat Varlamov. Washington jumped to a 2-0 series lead, but now face elimination after losing three straight games. --JB SERIES NEWS: GAME 4: PIT 5 WAS 3 PIT: Gonchar, S. (PPG, 03:55 in 1st),
Guerin, B. (10:47 in 1st), Fedotenko, R. (15:25 in 1st), Crosby, S.
(04:16 in 3rd), Talbot, M. (14:46 in 3rd) Nick Backstrom blasted a shot from the left wing past Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury just after the opening faceoff, but Sergei Gonchar returned the favor just 3:29 later, tying the game at one apiece on a shot from the high slot that beat Simeon Varlamov. Later in the first period, Sidney Crosby hacked at Varlamov's left pad, as the Washington goalie made a huge save, but Bill Guerin was left alone to pounce on a rebound and put it over Varlamov's left pad at 10:47 to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Ruslan Fedotenko crossed the Washington blueline a few minutes later, and let go a shot that Varlamov would have normally stopped, a high floating wrist shot from 45 feet. But Varlamov could not catch the easy shot and the Penguins finished the first period up, 3-1. Chris Clark put in a rebound off a puck that Mike Green shot off of Fleury's glove, late in the second. Sidney Crosby scored the game winner off a cross-slot pass from Miro Satan at 4:16 of the third. Milan Jurcina scored a shorthanded marker late in the third, but it was too little, too late, and Maxime Talbot closed the scoring later in the third. The Penguins did a good job in the defensive zone, blocking many shots, while Fleury's glove hand was very strong, robbing Sergei Fedorov, amongst other Capitals, throughout. Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar left the game with a knee injury after a knee-on-knee hit by Alex Ovechkin. He did not return, and his status is questionable. Ovechkin received a tripping penalty on the play. Pittsburgh outshot Washington, 28-22. Power play: Penguins, 1-6; Caps, 0-4. --JB GAME 3: PIT 3 WAS 2 (OT) PIT: Fedotenko, R. (09:29 in 2nd),
Malkin, E. (PPG, 15:01 in 3rd), Letang, K. (11:23 in 1st OT) Kris Letang scored at 11:23 of overtime on a blast from the blueline that deflected off of Washington defenseman Mike Green and beat goalie Simeon Varlamov as the Penquins drew back into the series. Pittsburgh, desperate for a win, outshot the Capitals 42-23. After enduring some criticism for his absence from the scoresheet in games one and two, Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin led his team with a goal on a whopping nine shots. "Gino was fantastic. He played a great game," said Penguins coach Dan Bylsma. "When we got the sixth (penalty) we were in the danger zone," said Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau of his team, which surrendered seven man-advantage opportunities. Pittsburgh capitalized on one of them when Malkin scored at 15:01 of the third period. Washington's Nick Backstrom banked the puck off Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, sending the the game to overtime at 18:10 of the third. --JB GAME 2: WAS 4 PIT 3 WSH: Ovechkin, A. Ovechkin, A. (PPG, 17:03 in 1st), Fleischmann, T. (01:46 in 3rd) With Pittsburgh's Sergei Gonchar in the penalty box, Alexander Ovechkin drew a hooking call on Matt Cooke late in the first period, giving the Capitals a 5-3 power play. Ovechkin converted their first 2-man advantage of the postseason courtesy a pass by Norris nominee Matt Greene, giving the Capitals a 2-1 lead at 17:03. Mark Eaton tied the game at even strength, on a rush that ended in the washington zone right corner, Chris Kunitz passed it back to the blue line, and Evgeni Malkin routed the puck to Eaton. Eaton let go a blast that beat Simeon Varlamov high. Varlamov responded with the finest save of the playoffs at the 18 minute mark. Chris Kunitz fed Sidney Crosby through the neutral zone on a great cross-drop play and they charged, 2-on-2, to the Caps net. Kunitz fed a pass across the slot, and Crosby banged the rebound to the net, only to be stopped on a certain goal when Varlamov reached back with the heel of his stick, stopping the puck at the red line. At 1:46 of the third period, Tom Fleischmann scored the game winner. --JB
