P. (16:17 in 3rd) Patrick Kane powered the Blackhawks with a hat trick and the teams engaged in a furious, 6-goal third period. In the end, the Hawks eliminated the Canucks before an emotional packed house at United Center and will face the winner of the Detroit/Anaheim series. Jon Toews scored the game-winner after Shane O'Brien took a hooking penalty with 6:34 remaining. The Blackhawks reached the Western Conference Final for the first time since 1995, when they lost to the Detroit Red Wings (who subsequently were defeated by New Jersey in the Cup Final). Shots on goal: VAN 38, CHI 30; Power play: VAN 1-5, CHI 3-4 --JB GAME 5: CHI 4 VAN 2 CHI: Byfuglien, D. (15:27 in 1st),
Byfuglien, D. (18:22 in 2nd), Bolland, D. (PPG, 14:55 in 3rd), Havlat,
M. (EN, 18:58 in 3rd) With a man advantage late in the third period after a high sticking penalty to Canuck defenseman Kevin Bieksa, Blackhawk forward Patrick Kane held the puck in at the Vancouver blueline with just under 14 minutes to play. After passing off to David Bolland, the puck bounced to Kane at the half boards. He deked a Vancouver defenseman, passed across the slot to Bolland, who slammed it home before Roberto Luongo could move laterally across the crease. The goal broke a 2-2 tie, and the Blackhawks never looked back. The Canucks now face elimination Monday night at United Center in Chicago. Dustin Byfuglien scored twice, one the game-tying goal late in the second. The Canucks struggled to create opportunities, shooting only ten times over the last two periods. Power play: Chi 1-5; VAN 1-2. Shots on goal: CHI 30, VAN 21 --JB GAME 4: CHI 2 VAN 1 (OT) CHI: Havlat, M. (17:16 in 3rd), Ladd, A.
(02:52 in 1st OT) It was a huge night for the Blackhawks' so-called "Non-Third Line" of Dave Bolland, Andrew Ladd and Martin Havlat. Havlat beat Vancouver's Roberto Luongo with 2:44 remaining in the third period, on a shot from the slot, from Bolland and Ladd. In overtime, Bolland sent a shot from between the top of the faceoff circle and the boards to the left of Luongo, which Andrew Ladd deflected, winning the game at 2:52. Vancouver's fourth line contributed the Canucks' only offense as Rick Rypien made a swift spin move in the slot, beating Chicago defensemen Matt Walker and Cam Barker, then hitting Darcy Hordichuk with a pass, who then beat Nik Khabibulin at 8:32 of the second frame. Vancouver was only able to generate 15 shots on Khabibulin, while the Blackhawks finished with 28. Typical 2-1 playoff game: The team with the extra goal doubled the shot total of the losing club. Happens all the time, and Hockeytalk is surprised that Vancouver's big guns disappeared. --JB GAME 3: VAN 3 CHI 1 VAN: Raymond, M. (15:34 in 1st), Bernier,
S. (PPG, 01:00 in 2nd), Sedin, H. (08:40 in 2nd) GAME 2: CHI 6 VAN 3 CHI: Sharp, P. (10:24 in 2nd), Sharp, P.
(PPG, 13:30 in 2nd), Bolland, D. (SHG, 16:50 in 2nd), Eager, B. (02:13
in 3rd), Kane, P. (05:48 in 3rd) Bolland, D. (EN 18:50 in 3rd) Sami Salo and Alexander Edler contributed from their defensive positions to give the Canucks a 2-0 first period lead. Patrick Sharp responded in the middle of the second period at even strength, then 2:06 later, on the power play, to even the score. Dave Bolland put the Hawks up, 3-2 on a shorthanded goal at the end of the second. Ben Eager and Pat Kane scored third period goals, and Bolland scored his second of the night into an empty net. The Canucks gave the Hawks nine power play opportunities, on which they scored twice. The Canucks potted two power play markers on five opportunities. A gutsy performance to come back in both road games to start the series, the Blackhawks were rewarded with a victory Saturday night as they send the series back to Chicago for games three and four. Shots: Blackhawks 32, Canucks 21. Patrick Sharp: 2 goals, 7 shots. --JB GAME 1: VAN 5 CHI 3 VAN: Demitra, P. (PPG, 15:22 in 1st), Sedin, H. (05:13 in 2nd),
Kesler, R. (15:23 in 2nd), Salo, S. (18:47 in 3rd), Johnson, R. (EN,
19:44 in 3rd) A third period comeback from a 3-0 deficit fell short as the Blackhawks surrendered a goal by Sami Salo with 1:13 left.
