ROUND 2
GAME RESULTS

2. DETROIT RED WINGS VS. 8. ANAHEIM DUCKS
DET WINS 4-3

GAME 7: DET 4 ANA 3

DET: Hudler, J. (PPG, 15:43 in 1st), Helm, D. (01:17 in 2nd), Samuelsson, M. (16:23 in 2nd), Cleary, D. (17:00 in 3rd)
ANA: Selanne, T. (14:50 in 2nd), Perry, C. (PPG, 17:12 in 2nd), Ryan, B. (07:37 in 3rd)

The Red Wings survived a late flurry after Bobby Ryan scored for the Ducks to tie the game in the third period.  Detroit will face Chicago for the Western Conference title.

The Wings struck in the first period, feeding off a Duck failure to convert a 2-man advantage earlier.  At 15:43 of the opening frame, Jiri Hudler made Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf pay for his second two-minute penalty of the first period, beating Jonas Hiller on a deflection of Johan Franzen's shot.

Detroit went up 2-0 on a breakaway goal by Darren Helm at 1:17 of the second, but the Ducks circled the wagons, and outshot Detroit 14-8 in the middle frame.  At 14:50, Teemu Selanne took advantage of a Ryan Whitney blast that deflected slightly off Ryan Carter, jamming the puck behind Chris Osgood to draw the Ducks withing one, 2-1.

The Wings regained their two-goal lead on a goal by Mikael Samuelsson just 93 seconds later, then Corey Perry scored at 17:12 to close the gap to one goal.  The second period ended 3-2.

At 7:37 of the third period, Bobby Ryan tied the game for the Ducks, slamming home a Corey Perry pass from across the slot.

But at 17:00, Dan Cleary crashed Hiller's crease, similar to a situation in game five on a Darren Helm goal.  Cleary was behind Hiller, in the crease, in another situation that did not result in a penalty.  The Wings' slot-heavy strategy paid dividends in this series, and in the end, the additional home game won by starting the season strong did wonders for the Motor City, as they defeated a solid opponent.

Power play: BOTH 1-5.  Shots on goal, DET 40, ANA 27.   The Red Wings outshot the Ducks 302-166 during the series.  --JB

GAME 6: ANA 2 DET 1

ANA: Getzlaf, R. (PPG, 02:21 in 2nd), Perry, C. (17:35 in 2nd)
DET: Franzen, J. (PPG, 17:35 in 3rd)

Ryan Getzlaf bounced back from a subpar performance in game five due to a virus, scoring from in close at 2:2`1 of the second period to open the scoring.  Getzlaf's linemate Corey Perry made a huge play to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.  On the backcheck in his defensive zone, Perry dove to stop the Wings' Valteri Filppula, then skated to the other end of the ice in time to deflect a Getzlaf shot past Chris Osgood at 17:35.

The Red Wings poured it on in the late second and third periods, outshooting the Ducks 17-7 in the final frame.  During a late man advantage, Johan Franzen scored to draw the Wings within one, making it 2-1 at 17:35, converting a Jiri Hudler pass at the top of Jonas Hiller's crease.

GAME 5: DET 4 ANA 1

DET: Franzen, J. (03:23 in 2nd), Hudler, J. (04:02 in 2nd), Helm, D. (16:52 in 3rd),
Zetterberg, H. (EN, 19:08 in 3rd)
ANA: Whitney, R. (PPG, 15:37 in 2nd)

In a lopsided victory, the Detroit Red Wings embarrassed the surprisingly ineffective Anaheim Ducks Sunday.
Questions abound over the health of Duck center Ryan Getzlaf, who appeared slow. The team's official position is that Getzlaf has been suffering from the flu recently. After difficult outings in games four and five, questions remain whether the Ducks' star is battling an undisclosed injury.

Johan Franzen and Jiri Hudler scored goals 39 seconds apart early in the second period.

A fierce backcheck and very strong defensive zone play led to the enormous shots on goal advantage, the Ducks unable to generate opportunities. The Ducks found most passing lanes clogged by Detroit.

Detroit outshot Anaheim by a whopping 38-17 margin, including 22-5 during the first 30 minutes of the game. Anaheim entered today's action having been outshot 185-121 in the first four games of the series. Despite entering the third period down by only one goal, Anaheim was outshot 15-5 in the final stanza. Detroit now holds a 223-138 shot advantage.

Darren Helm scored with 3:08 left to seal the victory, despite protestations by goaltender Jonas Hiller that Dan Cleary had interfered on the goal. Cleary was clearly in Hiller's crease, with a leg behind the Duck goaltender, but no penalty was called on the play.

Henrik Zetterberg scored an empty net goal for the second game in a row and the Wings departed Joe Louis Arena with a 4-1 victory. Detroit can close out the series Tuesday night at Honda Center in Anaheim.

GAME 4: DET 6 ANA 3

DET: Franzen, J. (11:49 in 1st), Franzen, J. (19:24 in 1st), Hossa, M. (16:02 in 2nd), Hossa, M. (PPG, 19:04 in 2nd), Samuelsson, M. (02:46 in 3rd), Zetterberg, H. (EN, 17:27 in 3rd)
ANA: Perry, C. (00:42 in 1st), Perry, C. (11:03 in 2nd), Niedermayer, S. (PPG, 10:03 in 3rd)

Corey Perry opened the scoring for the Ducks, who started strong early.  Perry beat Chris Osgood high to the stick side on a right wing rush just 42 seconds into the contest.

Later in the first period, Johan Franzen scored twice to give the Wings a 2-1 lead. One shot beating Jonas Hiller via the 5-hole, the next on a deflection of a Nik Kronwall shot.  Franzen and Tomas Holmstrom were both effective in front of the Ducks' net, which wasn't the case in Tuesday's loss.  The Wings were able to establish better slot presence in this game, while the Ducks struggled to generate shots.

Corey Perry evened the score on a shot from the slot at 11:03 of the second, but Marian Hossa would score at 16:02 and again just 3:02 later, which would prove to be the game winner.

Mikael Samuelsson's goal at 2:46 of the third on a shot high to the stick side corner gave the Wings a 5-2 lead, and led to Jonas Hiller's being pulled in favor of J-S Giguere, who stopped all 6 shots he faced in 16:49 of playing time.   Scott Niedermayer drew the Ducks to within two goals on a power play goal, but Henrik Zetterberg's empty netter finished the Ducks.

Shots: Detroit again outshot Anaheim, 40-28.  Detroit went 1-5 on the power play; the Ducks, 1-3.

Wings far better in the offensive zone slot tonight.  Ducks had better reverse the shots against trend or they can forget about advancing.  -- JB

GAME 3: ANA 2 DET 1

ANA: Selanne, T. (12:49 in 1st), Niedermayer, S. (PPG, 08:16 in 2nd)
DET: Zetterberg, H. (PPG, 14:20 in 2nd)

Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer scored for Anaheim as the Ducks' checking line of Todd Marchant, Rob Niededrmayer and Drew Miller shut down the Marian Hossa, Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom line.

A disputed goal with one minute remaining in the third drew controversy.  As Marian Hossa crashed the Anaheim net, poking in a loose puck, referee Brad Watson waved the goal off, despite the fact that the puck was not completely covered by Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller.  The Ducks escaped with the narrow victory.  Game Four is Thursday night in Anaheim. --JB

GAME 2: ANA 4 DET 3 (3OT)

ANA: Getzlaf, R. (08:16 in 1st), Pronger, C. (PPG, 08:50 in 1st), Carter, R. (PPG, 04:42 in 2nd), Marchant, T. (01:15 in 3rd OT)
DET: Stuart, B. (PPG, 06:00 in 1st), Samuelsson, M. (13:54 in 1st), Franzen, J. (05:19 in 3rd)

Midway through the first period, Anaheim defenseman James Wisniewski landed a good hit on Jiri Hudler, then later in the same penalty kill shift, Brad Stuart threw the puck at the net, but Wisniewski deflected the puck with his ankle and it went in, giving the Wings a 1-0 lead. The Ducks argued that there was a distinct kicking motion on Stuart's part while handling a bouncing puck, which went off his skate. The review came and went; Detroit was awarded the goal.

Later in the first, Corey Perry poked the puck away from Kronwall, and Ryan Getzlaf pounced on it in the right faceoff circle, beating Osgood at 8:16.

Just 44 seconds later, on a power play, Scott Niedermayer did his best Tomas Holmstrom imitation, screening Osgood as Chris Pronger ripped a blast from the point, giving Anaheim momentum and a 2-1 lead.

Mikael Samuelsson slid a backhander through Jonas Hiller's pads to make it 2-2 at 13:54.

Ryan Carter of the Ducks beat Chris Osgood on a hard charge to Osgood's glove side, slamming a puck home at 4:42 of the second period.

The Wings tied the game at 5:19 of the third period as Johan Franzen scored his second of this series.

In the third overtime, Todd Marchant shot from the top of the faceoff circle, blasting it past Chris Osgood on a hard charge down the left wing. .

Jonas Hiller made 59 saves on 62 shots, while Osgood made 42 saves on 46.  The Wings outshot the Ducks 29-17 during overtime.
