WAS WINS 4-3

RESULTS

Game 7: WAS 2 NYR 1

WSH: Semin, A. (15:34 in 1st), Fedorov, S. (15:01 in 3rd)
NYR: Antropov, N. (05:35 in 1st)

Russian Nik Antropov opened the scoring at 5:35 of the first period, fellow Russian Alexander Semin's goal at 15:43 of the first tied it for the Caps. The all Russian theme would continue as Sergei Fedorov would score the Game winner for the Caps at 15:01 of the third period to complete the Caps' comeback from a 3-1 series deficit. The Washington Capitals became just the 21st team in NHL history to recover from a 3-1 playoff deficit to win a series. The Rangers managed only one shot on goal in the third period. - CS

NEWS FLASH: NY Rangers' Coach Tortorella Suspended 1 Game (Gm 6)

Game 5: WSH 4 NYR 0

WSH: Bradley, M. (SHG, 04:58 in 1st), Bradley, M. (12:07 in 1st), Semin, A. (04:57 in 2nd), Ovechkin, A. (19:31 in 2nd)

Right wing Matt Bradley scored two goals, including one shorthanded to pace Washington.  Goaltender Simeon Varlomov stopped all 20 New York shots as the Capitals staved off elimination and forced a game six in a 4-0 victory. Both Washington victories during the opening round have been by the score of 4-0.

Chris Drury and Derek Morris were deked by Alexander Ovechkin with 29 seconds remaining in the second period as the reigning Hart Trophy winner scored one of his finest highlight-reel goals (in a young career replete with them), the Caps' fourth and final marker of the night.

Henrik Lundqvist's outing was his poorest so far this postseason, as he surrendered four goals on 14 shots and was replaced by Steve Valiquette at the start of the third period. Valiquette stopped all seven shots faced.

Nice to see super-pest Sean Avery benched by a coach who brooks no fools.  --JB

Game 4: NYR 2 WAS 1

NYR: Mara, P. (13:55 in 1st), Drury, C. (02:23 in 2nd)
WSH: Ovechkin, A. (02:13 in 3rd)

Henrik Lundqvist made 38 saves, tying a personal playoff best as the seventh-seeded Rangers put the Washington Capitals on the brink of elimination with a 2-1 victory. Lundqvist has stopped 140 of 148 Ranger shots during the first round.

Washington fell behind 3-1 against the Flyers in last year's opening round, pushing the series to overtime of Game 7, where they were finally eliminated. Ovechkin hit a post late in the third and was stymied with a glove save by Henrik Lundqvist later in the final frame.

"It's not done yet," said Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin. "We were in this situation last year and we came back. We know how to come back."

Ranger Sean Avery took a two-minute penalty for hitting Milan Jurcina in the face with his glove and stick, then took an idiotic penalty later in the game after swinging his stick at Brian Pothier's face.  Avery played dumb, but each instance looked deliberate, the Pothier incident obviously so.

Chris Drury is now tied with Mike Bossy and Glenn Anderson for sixth place on the all-time playoff game winning goals list, with 17 over the course of his career. --JB

Game 3: WAS 4 NYR 0

WSH: Semin, A. (06:57 in 1st), Semin, A. (11:36 in 1st), Laich, B. (PPG, 11:29 in 2nd), Poti, T. (PPG, 18:35 in 3rd)

Game 2: NYR 1 WAS 0

NYR: Callahan, R. (07:44 in 1st)

Ryan Callahan, breaking in on a two on one, fired a perfect pass from Markus Naslund high over the glove of Caps’ Rookie Goaltender SimeonVarlamov at 7:44 of the first period to give the seventh-seeded Broadway Blueshirts a 1-0 upset victory over the second-seeded Capitals.  Superstar Alexander Ovechkin grazed one off the cross-bar with six minutes remaining to no avail as Ranger Goalie Henrik Lundqvist made the difference, earning his third career playoff shutout by turning back  35 Caps shots on net and five power play attempts.  Rangers take a 2-0 series lead back to New York.

The normally high scoring Capitals need to improve their defensive play to prevent careless turnovers while they try to solve Lundqvist.- LR

Game 1: NYR 4 WAS 3

WSH: Fleischmann, T. (PPG, 06:40 in 2nd), Kozlov, V. (19:11 in 2nd), Semin, A. (PPG, 01:42 in 3rd)

Brandon Dubinsky's third period goal erased the Caps' home ice advantage
