Trailing two games to none in their opening round playoff series vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Philadelphia Flyers scored on their first two shots on goal in a penalty-filled first period en route to a badly needed 6-3 victory in Game 3.

Evgeni Malkin scored his third goal in as many games for the Pens with only 12 seconds left in the first period. Rob Scuderi then tied the score at 2-2 only 13 seconds into the second period, but Pittsburgh would never take the lead.

Simon Gagne's short-handed goal at 8:58 of the second period which gave the Flyers a 4-2 lead proved to be the game-winner. Rookie winger Claude Giroux who gave the Flyers a 3-2 second period lead before assisting on Gagne's game winner was named First Star of the game by the local media.

The Winner of this Series will likely represent Eastern Conference in Stanley Cup final-CS

Game 2: PIT 3 PHI 2 (OT)

PHI: Hartnell, S. (PPG, 13:26 in 1st), Powe, D. (02:09 in 3rd)
PIT: Guerin, B. (16:38 in 2nd), Malkin, E. (PPG, 16:23 in 3rd)

The Philadelphia Flyers knew they needed a better effort than the one in their playoff opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins to make their first round series competitive. They got the necessary effort but lost their composure in overtime to put themselves in a huge hole.

Bill Guerin scored his second goal of the game on a 5 on 3 power play off a feed from Sergei Gonchar at 18:29 of overtime to give the Penguins a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. The two man disadvantage was created when the Flyers' Mike Knuble and Claude Giroux took consecutive penalties within 30 seconds of each other.

Guerin positioned himself on the goal line to the right of Philadelphia netminder Martin Biron and beat him with a short wrist shot. Evgeni Malkin scored a game tying power play goal with 3:37remaining in the third period to forge overtime; the league's leading scorer deflected a Kris Letang slap shot off his right knee to set up the extra session.   --DB

Game 1: PIT 4 PHI 1

PHI: Gagne, S. (PPG, 15:25 in 3rd)

Pittsburgh's big guns were exactly that as Evgeni Malkin (Art Ross Winner '09) and Sid Crosby gave the Flyers fits.
