Eric Staal scored with :32 remaining to lift the Hurricanes to an improbable last-minutev 4-3 comeback victory in New Jersey.  Tim Gleason made a diving save of a puck headed out of the New Jersey zone, fed it to Joni Pitkanen who sent a long cross-ice pass to Jussi Jokinen, who tied the game 3-3 with 1:30 remaining, stunning the Devils.  --JB

Game 5: NJD 1 CAR 0

NJD: D. Clarkson (11:22 2nd; power play)

Cam Ward stopped 41 of 42 shots but the Hurricanes lost anyway as Martin Brodeur stopped all 44 shots en route to a 1-0 shutout victory in New Jersey Thursday.  David Clarkson scored on the power play at 11:22 of the second period, and the goal held up until game's end.  The Devils now lead the series 3-2.  --JB

Game 3: NJD 3 CAR 2 (OT)

NJD: Parise, Z. (06:04 in 1st), Gionta, B. (19:51 in 1st), Zajac, T. (04:58 in 1st OT)

Travis Zajac scored in overtime to fuel the Devils, who never trailed in the game, to victory in what is becoming the tightest series thus far.

Game 2: CAR 2 NJD 1 (OT)

CAR: Staal, E. (PPG, 19:35 in 1st), Gleason, T. (02:40 in 1st OT)
NJD: Parise, Z. (PPG, 10:44 in 1st)

Tim Gleason took a pass from Joe Corvo, and the former LA Kings' defensemen generated the game-winner in overtime, taking advantage of a screen set by Hurricanes center Eric Staal, who scored the game-tying goal on the power play at the end of the first period.  It was Gleason's first goal of the offseason.  Zach Parise opened the scoring for the Devils at 10:44 of the first period, also on the power play.  Both goaltenders were solid; Cam Ward stopping 33 shots; Martin Brodeur was 30 of 32 in the loss.  New Jersey was 1-6 on the power play; Carolina, 1-3.  New Jersey outshot Carolina, 34-32.

Offensive strength from the blueline is often a difference-maker in the playoffs, and in this matchup, the Hurricanes are more potent on defense than are the Devils. -- JB

The Hurricanes were beaten in all aspects of the game as the Devils rolled
